Compared to Australia, and considering both the U.S. and Australia are western, developed nations, the United States has a maternal mortality rate significantly higher than Australia. According to this article in the Huffington Post, maternal mortality rates have been drastically increasing in the United States since the 1990s, and the United States has a significantly high rate of maternal mortality compared to other developed nations, such as France and other European nations (Almendraia 2014). Some studies have shown that this rising rate is due to lack of free and affordable health care in the U.S.  (Almendraia 2014). Currently there are 40 million Americans with no health insurance, and even  a few years after Obamacare takes effect, there is expected to be 30 million US residents without insurance, half of these being women (Reid as cited by Almendraia 2014).
