In Afghanistan, women who are literate and more educated are less likely to die in childbirth, as more educated women often receive assistance from a healthcare provider or midwife while giving birth. According to this article in The Guardian about women's education in Afghanistan, women who are educated are more likely to survive childbirth, and more likely to prosper in other areas of life. A link between education and more prosperity for women was found on every measure analyzed by the organization called "Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan," showing that more education resulted in women living in wealthier households, having more access to sanitation facilities and clean water, better health and nutrition, and children who are less likely to be abused.

If you compare the data from the infographic on literacy to the infographic showing maternal mortality rates, you can see that literacy is very low in Afghanistan compared to the U.S., Mexico, and Australia; and maternal mortality rates are exceptionally high in Afghanistan compared to the other three countries.
